#SKINSTRUGGLES

This post is going to be a little unusual for me because I don't normally talk about products that I truly dislike on here, usually just ones I'm in love with. But I have to share this information with you guy because I dont wan't this to happen to anyone else.

I went to the dermatologist before I came back for the Spring semester and she gave me some creams and such and told me to buy Neutrogena Oil-free Acne Wash to control my acne that had flared up the past several months.
So I did, followed her directions and washed my face morning and night with this stuff. Then I started noticing my skin was getting extremely dry despite the moisturizer I was slathering on my face each morning and night.

Then one night when I washed my face my whole entire face burned so badly and I had red, raw spots all over and it was somewhat swollen...I had gotten a chemical burn from this face wash. And I don't have sensitive skin by any stretch of the imagination but this stuff did a number on me.

I immediately quit using it and for the next week my face was so dry and tight and it was incredibly flakey. My makeup just flaked off throughout the day. Even after I stopped using this product my face burned so badly each night when I washed it..and when it was time to put moisturizer on? I slathered it all over my face then had to sit in front of my fan because my face burned so bad. It was a terrible experience, I couldn't help but cry because it hurt so bad and cry because my poor face just looked horrible.

I used the Neutrogena for probably 3-4 days and it cleared up my skin a very tiny bit, but it just wasn't worth it. I read TONS of reviews that this product did the same exact thing to other people as well.

I have switched back to my Philosophy Purity cleanser and use that morning and night then moisturize after. Once my face is good and healed I think I am going to try and maybe, a big maybe, wash my face with the Neutrogena once a week, very lightly. Because I do think it cleaned my face well but there is no way I can use it more than once a week, and that may be pushing it.

So, my PSA, be careful if you try this product. And you may not want to use this as an everyday wash. My face was burned, raw, flakey, and dry for many days...even after I stopped using it. If this product works for you, more power to you!

Exhibit A-- it's somewhat hard to tell but my face got so red and swollen around my cheeks and eyes.

Exhibit B-- this is what makeup looks like when you try to put it on top of dry, burned, flaky skin.

Has anyone had any luck with this product?

  1. No. I used it for awhile but it wasn't helping. I switched to the green one with vitamin E in it and it was the cream cleanser. MUCH BETTER.

  2. I used to use that face wash every day from 7th grade through senior year of college and never had any issues with it. I'm sorry your experience was so bad!

    1. I'm so glad it worked for you! I was really, really hoping it was going to be my cure. I use it now about once a week, so I'm hoping that will work better!

  4. OUCH! That really sucks. I am so sorry, I have had face washed do that to me before. I have dry skin and it's way easy for mine to flake. I get acne flare ups too. The best thing I have done is get the Clarisonic Mio (my friend just got an off brand one at TJ maxx for much cheaper, $30!) but that little scrubber has helped keep my skin consistently clear. Good luck!!

    1. So glad you said that about the Mio. I was actually recommended that by my dermatologist and I think I'm going to invest in one soon!

  5. I some what used this as a kid in like middle school. Didn't do anything for me. I didn't have acne, occasionally a few zits, but didn't seem to be a good face wash at all. Best of luck finding one that works for you. Sorry to see/hear you were in so much pain.
